Safety & Health Canada guidelines

Tan responsibly.
We take this seriously.

Chinook Glow operates in full compliance with Health Canada's Guidelines for Tanning Equipment Owners, Operators and Users, and the Radiation Emitting Devices Regulations (Tanning Equipment).

HC
Health Canada Radiation Emitting Devices Regulations — Tanning Equipment
All tanning equipment at Chinook Glow complies with Health Canada's Radiation Emitting Devices Act and the amended Regulations (in force May 7, 2014). Exposure schedules follow manufacturer guidelines developed under Health Canada oversight. Client skin type is assessed prior to session planning. Session times are set by trained staff — clients do not self-select their exposure duration.
Our operating guidelines
  • A minimum of 48 hours is required between UV tanning sessions — this is a Health Canada recommendation and a Chinook Glow policy without exception
  • All clients complete a skin type assessment before their first session — exposure times are set by staff based on your Fitzpatrick skin type
  • Protective eyewear must be worn during every session — UV-blocking goggles are available for purchase at the desk
  • Client records are maintained to track cumulative exposure and ensure safe session planning over time
  • Tanning equipment is operated in compliance with the SunCapsule manufacturer's recommended exposure schedule
  • Any adverse reaction — including redness, irritation, or burning — should be reported to staff immediately
Important health warnings
  • UV tanning is not permitted for anyone under 18 years of age — this is law in Alberta and all Canadian provinces
  • Skin Type I (always burns, never tans) should not use UV tanning equipment — our skin type assessment identifies this at intake
  • UV radiation from tanning equipment is classified as a human carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) — cumulative exposure increases risk
  • Do not tan on the same day as outdoor sun exposure — this applies to both UV and infrared sauna sessions following substantial outdoor exposure
  • Certain medications increase photosensitivity — inform our staff of any prescriptions before using UV equipment
  • UV exposure without proper eye protection can cause corneal injury, cataracts, and long-term eye damage — eyewear is mandatory, not optional
In-salon products

Everything you need
to tan well.

We stock professional-grade eyewear and tanning lotions specifically selected for use with the SunCapsule X8 and X7. Our staff can help you choose the right product for your skin type.

UV Protective Eyewear

Health Canada and manufacturer guidelines require proper UV-blocking eye protection during every tanning session. Standard sunglasses do not provide adequate protection — UV rays pass through standard lenses and can cause serious eye injury including photokeratitis, cataracts, and long-term vision damage. We carry professional tanning goggles that provide full UV-A and UV-B blocking coverage, available for purchase at the front desk.

Professional Tanning Lotions

The right lotion makes a meaningful difference to the quality and longevity of your tan. We carry a curated selection of professional indoor tanning lotions designed specifically for use in UV booths — not outdoor sunscreen. These formulas maximise melanin activation, hydrate the skin during UV exposure, and extend the life of your tan between sessions. Our staff can recommend the right formula for your skin type and tanning goals.

Fitzpatrick skin type assessment

Know your skin.
Tan smarter.

The Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype Scale is the gold standard classification system used by dermatologists worldwide to assess how skin responds to UV light. Developed in 1975 by Harvard dermatologist Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, it divides skin into six types based on melanin content and reaction to sun exposure.

At Chinook Glow, we use this assessment to set your safe starting exposure time and recommend which booth is right for you. Your skin type is assessed at your first visit and recorded in your client file. It takes 2 minutes and protects you from overexposure.

About this tool
Fitzpatrick Phototyping Scale
Originally developed for PUVA phototherapy dosing. Now the standard for UV exposure planning in tanning, laser, and dermatological settings worldwide. Used in Canadian tanning salons under Health Canada guidance for setting safe initial exposure times. This quiz is a general guide — your staff assessment at Chinook Glow is your official on-file skin type.

Questions

What you want to
know first

Our staff will walk you through a quick skin type assessment using the Fitzpatrick scale — it takes about 2 minutes and involves a few questions about your hair, eye colour, and how your skin responds to sun. Based on your type, we'll recommend a starting session time, usually between 2 and 5 minutes, and set the booth accordingly. You won't control your own time on your first visit — we do that for you to make sure your first experience is safe and positive.
Both booths use 220W lamps but deliver a different experience. The X8 is a round capsule with up to 8 minutes per session — ideal for building a base and maintaining a tan at good value. The X7 is an angular premium capsule with a maximum of 7 minutes — it's more intense per minute and designed for experienced tanners who already have a base. We recommend starting in the X8 regardless of your experience until our staff are familiar with how your skin responds.
UV exposure causes a cellular response in the skin that takes time to complete. Tanning within 48 hours of your previous session means the skin hasn't fully recovered from the first exposure, increasing the risk of overexposure and cumulative UV damage. This is a Health Canada recommendation and a firm Chinook Glow policy — our staff track your session dates and will not book you sooner than 48 hours from your last UV session, including outdoor tanning.
Closing your eyes provides no meaningful protection. UV rays pass directly through your eyelids and can cause photokeratitis — a painful but temporary corneal burn — as well as contributing to cataracts and longer-term eye damage with repeated exposure. Proper UV-blocking tanning goggles are mandatory at Chinook Glow, no exceptions. We sell them at the desk and they're an affordable one-time purchase that protects you for hundreds of sessions.
Outdoor sunscreen is designed to block UV rays — which is the exact opposite of what you want in a tanning session. Using sunscreen in a booth would inhibit your tan, create uneven results, and in some cases, certain sunscreen formulas can interact with the booth's acrylic surface. Indoor tanning lotions are specifically formulated to maximise UV absorption, keep skin hydrated during exposure, and enhance the quality and longevity of your tan. Our staff can recommend the right lotion for your skin type.
No — your minutes never expire and can be used across both the X8 and X7 at any time. You choose your booth on the day of your visit and our staff sets your session time from your balance. Minutes packages are the best per-minute value we offer and work well for clients who tan regularly without committing to a monthly membership.
Unlimited means no session cap — you can tan as often as your schedule allows. However, unlimited UV memberships are subject to Health Canada's recommended tanning intervals. A minimum of 48 hours is required between UV sessions. Our staff reserve the right to manage session frequency for your safety. Unlimited is designed for regular tanners who want to maintain their tan year-round, not for daily use. The Gold and All Access memberships include both X8 and X7 access.

Chinook Glow operates in compliance with Health Canada's Guidelines for Tanning Equipment Owners, Operators and Users and the Radiation Emitting Devices Regulations (Tanning Equipment), in force May 7, 2014. UV tanning involves exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Skin damage from UV exposure is cumulative. Chinook Glow strongly recommends all clients understand the health risks associated with UV tanning before using our equipment. The Fitzpatrick Skin Type quiz on this page is a general educational guide — official skin type assessment is conducted by trained Chinook Glow staff at your first visit. Tanning equipment is not permitted for use by anyone under the age of 18 in accordance with Alberta's Skin Cancer Prevention (Artificial Tanning) Act.
